Architecture of early 20th century Kharkiv: personalities of architects in the context of stylistic diversity

Abstract

The article explores the architectural face of early 20th-century Kharkiv through the lens of leading architects’ creative work, whose individual approaches shaped the city’s unique stylistic palette. Within just a few decades, an unprecedented combination of eclecticism, Art Nouveau, Neoclassicism, Constructivism, and Art Deco emerged – a phenomenon unparalleled in Ukrainian architecture. This diversity resulted from the interplay of European artistic movements, Kharkiv’s status as a capital city (1919–1934), and the Ukrainian national-cultural revival. Architects’ personalities are examined as key carriers of the historical and cultural context: their education, study trips abroad, membership in professional associations, and teaching activities directly influenced the city’s built environment. Considerable attention is paid to the tragic fates of these artists during the 1930s repressions and World War II, which severely disrupted the continuity of Kharkiv’s architectural school. In the context of ongoing military conflict, the city’s authentic multi‑style environment faces the threat of physical destruction and irreversible loss. The authors argue that alongside damage from shelling, unprofessional “emergency” repairs and the lack of a systematic conservation policy pose equal dangers. As a theoretical framework, the study adopts an approach based on international recommendations for managing historic urban landscapes, which treats successive stylistic layers as an integrated cultural palimpsest. Practical preservation tools identified include digital documentation (3D modelling, cultural mapping) and the establishment of multidisciplinary commissions involving architects, conservators, community activists, and international organisations. The findings can inform restoration programmes, adaptive reuse of historic buildings, the creation of heritage trails, and the formation of municipal heritage policies. The article concludes that preserving Kharkiv’s authentic architectural diversity is not only a local cultural mission but also a significant contribution to European cultural heritage at large. By integrating local architectural legacy into international academic discourse and cooperating with global heritage bodies, the study offers actionable strategies for resilient post‑war urban recovery.
